Cloud Data centres are designed to support the business requirements of cloud clients. However, due to the complexities of data centre infrastructure and their software systems, cloud service providers often do not have access to quality data regarding their IT equipment. This hinders their ability to better optimise the quality of their services and system performance. A clear message from across the industry is that better data allows for better decision making and resource management. A digital twin of a data centre is a virtual or digitised replica of a data centre that would allow real-time analysis of monitoring data of the data centre to avoid problems before they occur, prevent downtime, develop new opportunities such as energy-saving and even plan for the future by using simulations. With the explosion of Internet-of-Things (IoT) sensors such as power, humidity and temperature and the advancement of software and monitoring systems in cloud data centres, building data centres digital twins that would allow for better resource management and enhancement of data centre efficiency is now possible.

Aim/outline

This project aims to build a 3D digital twin of a real-world micro data centre equipped with an OpenStack Cloud platform using various sensory data collected within the infrastructure. The project visualises the computing and networking components of the micro data centre in a way that allows for improved quality of service and performance. We created a prototype and proof of concept. You will continue the project to expand it.

Required knowledge

  • Linux Scripting skills (Python Programming skill is a plus)
  • Basic Knowledge of Cloud Computing
  • Data Centre and Networking Knowledge
  • Object Programming language Experience with Unity is a plus.
