AI for the Eye

Primary supervisor

Yasmeen George

The need: Early detection and diagnosis of eye conditions is critically important as many diseases, including diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration, often show minimal or even no symptoms. Glaucoma is called the "silent thief of sight" since it progressively damages the eyes without any noticeable signs.

Aim/outline

Through the analysis of retinal fundus photographs, AI and deep learning techniques can effectively detect subtle changes and abnormalities that might go unnoticed by human observers. Such techniques enable timely intervention and effective treatment plans, which can potentially prevent irreversible vision loss and provide efficient monitoring of disease progression.
