Dr Muhammed Esgin is a Senior Lecturer at Faculty of Information Technology, Monash University with research expertise spanning both theoretical and practical dimensions of cyber security, particularly around cryptography. His research addresses some of the most pressing challenges facing Australia's cyber security landscape: protecting sensitive information in an increasingly data-driven society, preparing cyber systems for the emergence of quantum computing, enabling secure digital identity, and strengthening the security of blockchain technologies. Particularly, he has developed secure, efficient, and deployable cryptographic systems resilient to quantum-capable adversaries (a.k.a. post-quantum cryptography), while simultaneously advancing privacy-enhancing technologies (PETs) that enable data-driven innovation without compromising privacy.
Dr Esgin has established international collaborations with leading researchers worldwide including from Google (US) and IBM Research - Zurich, supervised and mentored the next generation of cyber security professionals, attracted over $1.7M competitive research funding, and contributed extensively through editorial, conference, and professional service. His research has been recognised through several prestigious awards/grants, including an Amazon Research Award, Google Research Scholar Award, Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Project, and the Vice-Chancellor’s Commendation for Thesis Excellence. He led an industry-funded project and served as Deputy Director on a $1 million grant awarded by the U.S. Department of State.
