Designing Inclusive Cultural Experiences For the Blind and Low Vision Community

Using digital technologies (such as 3D printing, soundscapes, beacon navigation), this project will explore the creation accessible cultural experiences for people who are blind or have low vision (BLV). Accessible materials and space design will be developed and evaluated to provide an evidenced-based framework for producing inclusive experiences with arts and culture, such as Art Galleries. Current partners include the Bendigo Art Gallery and Science Gallery Melbourne.

Aim/outline

The aims of this project are to explore the use of emerging technologies as they may be used to support blind and low vision (BLV) people engage with arts and culture. Gallery spaces and the works within are the primary case study, however the project is not restricted to those. The expected aims of the project are to:

  1. Identify the opportunities that exist for improved access to arts and culture by BLV people through review of existing research and practice, and analysis of emerging technologies
  2. Developing a series of materials to support engagement with arts and culture by BLV people, and evaluate their suitability
  3. Develop key design guidelines for the use of these new technologies in the provision of accessible cultural experiences by BLV people

Required knowledge

No explicit knowledge is required, however it is strongly expected that the candidate will have:

  • Experience with the use of emerging "maker" technologies such as 3D printing and electronics, or similar technology
  • Be willing to work with both BLV users and cultural institutions, and undertake user studies
  • Be an advocate for both inclusive practice, and arts and culture
