Towards ML/AI generated content for language learning

Primary supervisor

Christoph Bergmeir

The thesis will be performed as part of an ongoing project with the Monash Faculty of Arts. We use and develop machine learning methods for content generation to learn a new language (in particular French in our current work). We use given authentic material such as videos and news articles and generate from them activities such as filling in blanks, matching, ordering, etc. They are all implemented into a web app that is then trialed in French teaching at Monash.

Aim/outline

The thesis will find and evaluate existing web APIs and libraries for content generation, such as text2speech, speech2text, timing, translation, semantic analysis, etc., and will investigate how these techniques can be used, adapted and optimized for language learning, e.g. by instead of generating a full translation, generating mere hints in the learners native language.
