Summer Research Scholarship: Designing and Evaluating AI-Assisted Teamwork Feedback for Computing Education

Teamwork is a critical graduate capability in computing education, yet students often receive little meaningful feedback about how they collaborate until a project has finished. This limits opportunities for teams to identify issues early, improve their collaboration, and develop teamwork skills throughout the semester.

This project builds on the EPIC (Empowering Productive and Inclusive Collaboration) platform, an AI-supported teamwork feedback system currently under development at Monash University. Previous work has involved co-designing the platform with students and teaching associates to understand their needs, concerns, and expectations. The next stage focuses on transforming these design insights into a working system and evaluating how students interact with AI-assisted teamwork feedback during authentic project-based learning.

Students will contribute to the design, implementation, and evaluation of AI-supported features that help students monitor team progress, reflect on collaboration, and receive timely formative feedback throughout a project. The project combines Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Generative AI, Learning Analytics, and Computing Education research.

Aim/outline

The aim of this project is to design, implement, and evaluate AI-assisted teamwork feedback that supports collaboration in project-based computing education.

Depending on the student's interests, the project may involve:

  • extending the EPIC platform based on findings from recent co-design studies
  • designing and implementing AI-assisted teamwork feedback features
  • improving the user interface and overall user experience
  • evaluating student perceptions of AI-generated feedback, including usefulness, trust, and transparency
  • conducting user studies with students and teaching associates
  • analysing qualitative and/or quantitative data to inform future iterations of the platform
  • producing design recommendations for AI-supported teamwork feedback systems

Students with stronger software development interests may focus on implementing new platform capabilities, while students interested in Human-Computer Interaction or Computing Education may focus more heavily on user studies, evaluation, and design research.

Experience with one or more of the following would be beneficial:
